It all depends on the ratio of carbon and the metal to form an alloy. When carbon content is increased it can be molded and shaped as per customization. It also reduces the melting point. It is added in various quantities.

  • A steel alloy with carbon with 0.12% to a maximum of 2%.
  • The steel alloy may not contain zirconium, chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, titanium or any other material.  
  • A steel bar may contain less than 0.4% copper.
  • The steel bar may contain 1/65% manganese or copper (0/6%).

Properties of carbon steel bars

The medium carbon steel is stronger. It is also difficult to weld, hence heat treatment is given for tempering to harden. It is primarily used for making couplings, bridges, gears, rails, shafts, cars, washing machines and fridges.

In contrast to these high carbon steel is extremely difficult to weld, bend or cut. With heat treatment it becomes brittle.They are perfect for making tools, springs, high strength wires and blades.
